In the spring of 2018, discussions began to formulate a new chapter that would service Brothers on the Southside of the city of Atlanta. During these discussions/meetings, there were consultations with the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. State Director of GA Executive Board on the process to establish a charter. After the process was discussed the brothers of the McDonough Colony began working together to establish the necessary paperwork needed for the application which consisted of constitution & bylaws, roster of financial brothers, five-year strategic plan, and letters of support from various persons and entities.
November 19, 2018, the Charter Application was submitted to the Southern Regional Director, Brother Martin Roy Edmonds for consideration. During that time, the Southern Regional Director provided the colony of brothers with the Charter Process.
We knew that there was work to be done. The first step was to have the approval of the State Director. The proposed chapter made a presentation at the State Conference in February 2019 in Macon, GA. Brothers Craig Bowe and Michael Smith presented the proposal for the chapter with several brothers of the colony in attendance. After the presentation, the State of Georgia chapters voted, and there was a majority vote to move forward with chartering a new chapter. However, the journey was not complete.
In March 2019, an application was submitted to the Regional Director in which he approved it and moved it forward to be placed on the International General Board agenda in May. After careful consideration, the General Board unanimously voted “yes” on the approval of the chapter. The area of responsibility for the chapter consisted of four counties, Clayton, Fayette, Henry, and Spalding with the cities of: Conley, Ellenwood, Rex, Stockbridge, Jonesboro, Riverdale, McDonough, Hampton, Lovejoy, Locust Grove, Fayetteville, and Griffin. The chapter provided an opportunity for growth through reclamation, reactivation, and recruitment and the opportunity to brand Sigma in the area and increase programs and service opportunities.
The chapter has participated in all the Global Initiatives of the Fraternity to include Bigger & Better Business -Support of Black Businesses, Education - Adoption of Hampton Middle School and PPE donations, and Social Action - International Day of Service, Adoption of Haven House, and Blue Boots on the Ground – Voter’s Registration.
